Dentures - Complete & Partial
Your teeth perform several essential tasks throughout the day. They allow you to bite and chew your food, beginning the digestive process. They control air flow, allowing you to speak properly. They give you a beautiful smile. They also work to keep your jaw strong and healthy. When you lose your teeth, every last one of these jobs is affected. At National Dental Oakland Gardens, we offer several options for replacing missing teeth, including complete and partial dentures.
What Causes Tooth Loss?Tooth loss occurs for many different reasons. One of the most common causes of tooth loss is gum disease. As your gums swell, pockets form between the tissue and your teeth. Bacteria fall into these pockets and attack the periodontal ligaments that hold your teeth in place, as well as your jawbone. Both structures grow weaker, and your teeth become loose, eventually falling out.
There are several other causes of tooth loss:
What are Dentures?Dentures have been one of the most common tooth replacement options for many years. In fact, they have been around for hundreds of years. Over the years, they have undergone many changes, and the dentures of today are different from the dentures of the past. Today’s dentures are even vastly different than they were just a few decades ago, looking more natural and fitting more comfortably.
Dentures consist of false teeth set into a hard, acrylic base. The base is customizable, so that it may match the color of your gum tissue. The base is supported by your gums, held in place by suction. Dentures are meant to be removed nightly for cleaning and to give your gums a chance to rest.
Complete DenturesComplete, or full, dentures, are prosthetic teeth that are made to replace an entire missing arch (or both) of teeth. Any teeth that are left in your mouth that are no longer viable must first be removed. Once your teeth are removed, we take impressions of your mouth, which are used to design your custom replacement teeth.
Partial DenturesIf you are missing consecutive teeth but still have perfectly healthy teeth remaining, there is no need to extract them. Partial dentures are made to replace these sections of missing teeth. They are made similarly to complete dentures and consist of the same components, along with one extra. Partial dentures are equipped with metal clasps that hook on to your healthy teeth, helping to hold them in place.
Caring for Your DenturesDentures require some extra care. They need to be removed every night for cleaning. Brush them with a soft bristled toothbrush and denture paste (or soap and water). After you have rinsed them off, they should be left to soak in a denture cleaning solution. You should also brush your gums, any remaining teeth, and the other soft tissues of your mouth. In the morning, brush your gums again, rinse your dentures and set them in place.
