Your teeth play a key role in your smile and the impressions that you leave on those around you. When they have imperfections in them, even small ones, your smile, and your confidence is greatly impacted. At National Dental Oakland Gardens, we offer veneers to help restore the beauty to your teeth, leaving you to smile confidently once again.
What are Veneers?Veneers, like dental bonding, are designed to cover a myriad of minor dental imperfections. They are thin, shell-like restorations that are cemented (bonded) to the front surfaces of your teeth. Unlike bonding, they require that some of the enamel of your teeth be removed for the veneers to sit naturally in with the rest of your smile.
What Can Veneers Fix?Veneers are used to fix some different issues with your teeth:
Veneer MaterialsVeneers can be made out of one of two materials – composite resin (the same material used for bonding) or porcelain. At National Dental, our veneers are made of porcelain. Porcelain offers several benefits over composite resin. For one, it is stronger. Moreover, while both materials match the color of your teeth, porcelain can be stained and finished to perfectly blend in with the exact shade of the rest of your teeth. It also mimics the light reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel.
How are Veneers Placed?Placing your veneers begins with a local anesthetic. We then trim, or remove, a small portion of the enamel on the surface of the affected teeth. Next, impressions of your mouth are taken, which are sent to our lab. There, your veneers are designed and created. It can take up to two weeks for your veneers to be completed. You may not need temporary veneers, but they can be provided for aesthetics.
When your veneers are ready, we check them for proper fit. Then they are cemented in place. This process starts with a lightly acidic gel applied to the surfaces of your teeth, which creates a rough surface. This texture will help the veneers to bond better with your teeth. The gel is washed off, and your teeth dried. Finally, the veneers are set in place.
Caring for Your VeneersCare for your porcelain veneers just as you would your natural teeth. You should continue to brush and floss every day. Even though veneers cannot suffer tooth decay, they can still collect plaque and bacteria that can lead to gum disease. Avoid biting or chewing on anything too hard, such as ice, popcorn kernels, or your fingernails. Porcelain can withstand normal biting and chewing forces, but it is not impervious to damage. Biting down on anything too hard can cause it to chip or break. It is also important to maintain regular dental visits. When we examine your teeth and gums, we will also check your veneers to make sure that they are still in good condition.
