Who is a Candidate?
There are many options available today for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants have quickly become one of the most popular options, for both patients and dentists. Moreover, with good reason. They offer numerous benefits over traditional tooth replacement options like bridges and dentures. They restore your smile, they restore the many important functions of your mouth, and they help to preserve the strength of your jawbone. At National Dental Oakland Gardens, we offer this revolutionary treatment, and a consultation to determine if you are, indeed, a candidate.
Are You Missing Teeth?Dental implants, which consist of small, titanium rods that are surgically inserted into your jawbone, are designed to replace missing teeth. The most obvious sign that you may be a candidate is that you are missing teeth. Implants are highly customizable, so whether you are missing one tooth, or you are missing all of your teeth, implants can be made to fit those needs. If you are not missing teeth yet, but you are scheduled to undergo an extraction, implants can be discussed as well.
What is Your Overall Health?Implants require surgery, which means that they will require a recovery period. The best way to ensure that you will heal properly, and promptly, is to make sure that you are in good overall health. If you have gum disease, it will need to be treated with surgery, as bacteria can invade surgical sites. If you have chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, the condition will need to be kept under control. Conditions like diabetes can slow your healing, which can then increase your risk of developing an infection.
Do You Smoke?Smoking has many negative health effects. Not only does it interfere with your breathing and your heart, but it also restricts the oxygen levels in your blood. It also significantly slows your ability to heal. Smoking can also cause a condition known as dry socket, in which the blood clot at the surgical site becomes dislodged, leaving an open space for bacteria to enter. All of these factors increase your risk of developing an infection. Infections can ultimately lead to implant failure, which can then lead to the need for bone grafts (to replace implants) or another alternative to tooth loss.
How Old Are You?Many patients who have lost their teeth think that they are too old to get dental implants. The truth is, you are never too old, so long as you meet the other criteria to be considered a candidate. You can, however, be too young. Children and young teens have jaws that are still growing. Placing an implant in a child can impact the growth of that child’s mouth, causing serious complications later on. If your child has lost a permanent tooth, we will need to consider an alternative until they are old enough for an implant.
What Does Your Jaw Look Like? For implants to be successful, they rely on a process known as osseointegration. This means that your jawbone fuses with the titanium rod. For implants to fuse properly, you must first have sufficient bone mass. The issue is that when you lose your teeth, your jawbone begins to weaken. During our consultation, we will take digital images to assess the condition of your jawbone. If you are thought to have a jaw that is too weak, we will discuss other options, such as a bone graft or the All-on-4® treatement concept system.
