When it comes to a beautiful smile, most people tend to think only of the quality of their teeth. While it is important to have teeth that are straight, white, and free of imperfections, it is more crucial to have healthy teeth. When you have excess gum tissue, it can cover your teeth, making even perfectly straight white teeth appear small, almost like baby teeth. At National Dental Oakland Gardens, we can get rid of your “gummy” smile with an aesthetic gum lift.

Also known as a crown lengthening, an aesthetic gum lift is a surgical procedure that is designed to get rid of excess gum tissue. In some cases, a small amount of bone may also need to be removed to achieve the desired results, but this is not always necessary. The ultimate goal of an aesthetic gum lift is to restore a more natural, even gum line and give your teeth a longer, more natural appearance.

An aesthetic gum lift is performed under a local anesthetic (although sedation can be used as well, if necessary). The exact length of time your procedure will take depends on a few different factors, such as how many teeth are being corrected, and if you need any bone to be removed as well. We start by making incisions in the gum tissue, which exposes the roots of your teeth. Next, the excess tissue is removed. At National Dental, our aesthetic gum lift is performed with the use of a laser, instead of a scalpel. The laser is a high-intensity beam of light, no thicker than a human hair. It allows for pinpoint accuracy and causes much less tissue trauma (which lessens the amount of post-surgical pain and swelling). The laser also cauterizes as it cuts, minimizing bleeding. Along with removing excess tissue, we also remove any bone, if necessary. When we are finished, we stitch your gums back up against your teeth.

An aesthetic gum lift has many different benefits:

  • Your gum line is evened out and looks more natural.
  • Your teeth appear longer and more natural.
  • The results of your procedure are noticeable right away.
  • Your oral health is improved. With your excess gum tissue gone, there are fewer places for harmful oral bacteria to hide.

Excess gum tissue can get in the way of restoring the health of your teeth. If you have a crack that extends under your extra gum tissue, removing the tissue will help your dental crown to fit properly over the surface of your teeth.

A cavity at the gum line can also benefit from a gum lift. By removing excess tissue, we can better access the cavity, thoroughly cleaning out the decay and properly filling it.

If a gummy smile is affecting the quality of your beautiful smile, an aesthetic gum lift can help. Contact National Dental Oakland Gardens today at (718) 407-0574 to find out if it is right for you.
