ROTARY ENDO

Root canals, or endodontic treatments, are a common treatment for infections in your teeth. They provide a way for the infection to be removed while allowing your tooth to stay rooted in its socket. At National Dental Oakland Gardens, we take care of infections in your teeth with rotary endodontic treatment.

HOW DO INFECTIONS GET INTO YOUR TEETH?

Infections in your teeth are a result of bacteria seeping into your teeth. However, how do they get in? Bacteria can enter your teeth in a variety of different ways. You may have a chipped or cracked tooth that extends past the enamel and into the dentin, the inner layer of your teeth that houses hollow canals that lead to the roots of your teeth. A cavity may have penetrated the dentin. Bacteria can also get into your teeth as a result of gum disease. Once the bacteria get into the tooth, they stay there and continue to multiply. As they do, they irritate the pulp of your tooth, causing it to become inflamed. As the infection continues to grow, it can even spill out through the root of your tooth, causing a dental abscess, which is a sac that forms in an attempt to contain the infection. As the infection grows, the abscess grows. There is also a risk that the abscess bursts and bacteria can enter your bloodstream, leading to serious health issues like heart disease and stroke.

ENDODONTIC TREATMENT

Endodontic treatment, or a root canal, is the only way to remove an infection from your tooth, aside from extracting the affected tooth. With a root canal, your tooth can stay in its socket. We begin with a local anesthetic, which will ensure that you don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure. The tooth is then drilled into from the top, and small tools are used to remove the pulp, shape the canals and clean and disinfect the interior of the tooth. Finally, the tooth is packed and capped with a crown, which provides the tooth with strength while protecting it from any new infections.

WHAT IS ROTARY ENDODONTICS?

Typically, with endodontic treatment, the canals are shaped using a manual stainless-steel file. This file is well known for being unforgiving, as well as noisy. At National Dental, our root canal procedures are performed using rotary endodontic treatment. To shape and clean your canals, we use a power rotary tool, with a nickel-titanium tip. Nickel-titanium is up to 5 times more flexible than stainless steel. This means that it can easily access and shape curved canals and there is much less risk of damage to your teeth.

BENEFITS OF ROTARY ENDODONTICS

There are several benefits that come with rotary endodontic treatment:

  • There is a significantly reduced risk for complications. The nickel-titanium tip is more flexible than stainless steel.
  • Nickel-titanium also allows for smoother, more consistent canal cleaning and shaping.
  • With an electric tool, your treatment is faster.
  • The rotary tools are much quieter than the stainless-steel file.

Rotary endodontic treatment can provide additional benefits for those with dental fears and anxiety. Pain is often associated with traditional endodontic treatment. This is because the stainless-steel file makes so much noise. The sounds can set some people on edge. However, because the rotary tools are quieter, and the procedure is faster, it can help to ease the fears of those in need of a root canal.
